Kershaw Gets A Grip On The Competition

Kershaw Knives' Multi-Tool!
Kershaw Knives' Multi-Tool

Ever get the feeling that the multi-tool has evolved just about as far as it's going to? Well that attitude will never get you a job at Kershaw Knives, where the next leap in multi-tool design has taken place. The big idea: less frivolous "tools" that you don't really need, and more thoughtful design and better quality construction of the features that you actually use. Gone are the ridiculous fish scalers, corkscrews and useless scissors of the past. In are vice-gripping needle nose pliers, customizable assembly and a thumb-stud opening blade that can be accessed while the tool is in the closed position.

We were fortunate enough to get our hands on one and were simply floored by what we saw. Kershaw's Multi-Tool is without a doubt one of the finest crafted tools on the market. Constructed from high quality stainless steel, the balance was superb. Every joint and attachment site uses machine screws (no rivets) for thorough maintenance and easy cleaning. This also means that it can be customized by the owner to fit whatever job he or she has in mind.

One of the first things you'll notice about Kershaw's Multi-Tool is that the pliers/wire-cutters don't retract like other brands. This tool was designed with durability in mind, and retractable, moving parts wear out over time. The vice-grip feature also works like a charm; simply clamp the pliers down for a firm, secure grip and hit the release when you're done.

This tool is no one trick pony; it comes equipped with several foldouts: one Philips head and one standard (flat head) screwdriver, a file with "coarse" and "fine" sides, ruler, a hacksaw blade, and a bottle opener/can opener. Each tool locks open and the handles of the multi-tool can be locked together with the tool out for additional grip. And if you do manage to break one of the foldouts, Kershaw's modular design lets you simply remove the broken piece and screw in a replacement. Nice and easy.

Another impressive feature is the knife blade. Unlike other multis that force you to open the tool to get to the blade, Kershaw lets you open their knife with a flick of the thumb, even when the tool is closed. And don't think that they skimped on the blade; Kershaw has built a solid reputation for making the finest easy-action folders on the market, and they certainly brought it to their multi tool. Constructed from 440A- surgical stainless steel, the 2-½ inch, partially serrated blade holds a superb edge for an incredible amount of time.

Bottom line is if you're looking for a multi-tool that takes your work as seriously as you do, then Kershaw's Multi-Tool is the only way to go. With its solid construction and superior engineering, you'll be able to depend on it for years and years to come. The Multi-Tool comes standard with a nylon carrying pouch. For about one hundred dollars you can pick one up wherever outdoor equipment is sold or online at one of the dealers listed at www.KershawKnives.com.
