The HJC-FRS Chatterbox helmet communicators
ViewOnline Staff

The chatterbox is a compact, hands free voice activated two way radio that mounts directly to your helmet. At first I thought that this may present a small problem, what with the extra weight hanging from the side of my helmet. But due to its light weight the unit presents no difficulties. It's so light you hardly even notice it.

The range on these handy little gadgets is about two miles but due to the fact that I tested them here in the hill country it was cut down to about a 1 and 1/4 miles. I did, however, take the time to ride out to a clear area to test the range and it performed admirably at two miles.

Installation was a breeze and with the included velcro attachments removal from the helmet was also a snap (or, if you prefer, a rip). The battery life was more than satisfactory as well providing more than enough life for a full day of riding, but dont forget to charge it back up for the next day or they tend to go out on you.

All in all I would give the FRS unit four stars. You can pick one up for about $200 and it is well worth it to not worry about misunderstood hand signals or even being seperated from the other riders in your group.

Thanks to Robert and the folks over at HJC-Chatterbox for letting us play with this nifty little toy-- and dont forget to check out their website at www.hjc-chatterbox.com or give them a call at 1-800-452-2269.

And as always ride safe
